Castlepoiat Licensing District
A meeting of the Castlepoint Licensing Committee was held at Tinui on Saturday last, Present— Messrs Handysid9 (chairman) Murray, Speedy and Belliss. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The Constable's report on the licensed houses in the district was read and considered. Applications were received :—From Thos Carswell to transfer the publican's license for Blairlogie Junction Hotel from himself to Edward Lee, granted; from Thos M. Brown, for renewal of license, Taueru Hotel, granted; from B. Lee, for renawal of license, Blairlogie Junction, granted; from A. Owen, for renewal of license, Tinui Hotel, granted j from W. J. Burling, for renewal of license, Grassendale Hotel, granted ; from J. Mcintosh jnr., for accommodation license, Whakataki, grantedfee, .£ls ; from John Jepson, for accommodation license, Aohanga Ferry, granted, fee .210.
The Clerk was directed to require Mrs Owen and Mr Mcintosh to make necessary repairs to their stables and other outbuildings. This cpncludedjhe. business and the meeting adjourned. Pahiatua Town Licensing l Committee.
The annual sitting of the above Committee was held on Monday. Charles Benzie applied for a license ; for a house to be called the Occidental Hotel, now used as a boarding-house, containing 32 rooms. Mr Pownall for applicant; Mr Tosswill opposed. After some argument the Bench decided to refuse the license, as they were of opinion it was npt required. Licenses were granted to Richard Price, for the Union Hotel, and P. T. Spillane for the Club Hotal. A renewal was also granted to Wm. Stewart for the Commercial and Family Hotel, the report of the police being favourable. Alfredton Licensing l District
The annual meeting was held on Wednesday, May 10. PresentMessrs A. Anderson, Saunders, Harding, McAnulty, and Syversen. Mr A. Anderson was elected Chairman.
The minutes of the last meoting were read and confirmed.
The report on the hotels by the police was favourable in all oases. The first application gealt with was that of Edward BUiston; wha applied for a license for the Railway Hotel. Mr Ppwnall appeared for the applicant. Mr Elfiston stated that all formalities had been complied with. The Bencji went into Committee on the application, which was eventually granted. I The Chairman said that while the Committee granted the license they were not satisfied with the action of the licensee in the past. A case had b#en mentioned that, a prohibited person had been supplied with drink. If this was done in the future the license would be cancelled. Mr Pownall thanked the Chairman for his remarks, and thought it was to the interest of the licensees to conduct their, houses properly. The application of Charles Stewart for a license for a house to be called the Junction Hotel, Hawera, was next considered.
Mr Pownall appeared for- the applicant, who stated that there was a paddock of 24 acres attached to the premises.
Constable Roche objeoted on the ground that the house was not furnished.
The applicant stated: I> am a single man. I intend to keep the house myself. I have not kept a house before.
Mr Gadsby, called, stated that he resided nearly opposite the house. He thought the house was required, there being no accommodation on the road between Pahiatua *and Eketahuna.
Constable Roche objeoted to the witness, he not being a householder, and demanded that his name be struck off the certificate. The Act stated that he should be a householder residing in the district. He objeoted to another name on the certificate. These two being struck out, there remained only nine householdera,and therefore there was no application before the Bench.
Mr Pownall objected to the constable's report. The bench had no right to strike any name off the certificate. The Committee should not allow Constable Roache to object. Constable Roache: I am not working for the publicans or anyone, but for the public. Mr James Hall, carrier, of Pahiatua, stated on oath tlut he thought a house there was necessary. By Constable Roache: There' are four'carriers on the road. I don't think all I spend would keep the house.
By the bench : I have stopped all night on the road several times. 1 think the house is necessary. Mr Parsons stated that he objected to the application on the ground that the certificate was not signed by ten householders.
Mr Pownall spoke in answer to Mr Parsons. The Chairman asked Mr Stewart if he proposed to go into the house immediately. The applicant replied in the affirmative. The application was granted on the same conditions as those read to Mr Elhston.
Mr Felling applied for a transfer of the license of the Club Hotel to himself. The license was granted on the same conditions as the other licenses.
Mr Toohill applied for a renewal of license for the Universal Hotel aranted.
Mr Parsons applied for a renewal of license for the Eketahuna hotel, Granted. The same notice to apply in each case. The Chairman stated that if there was one conviction in the cases read, the Committee would deal with it at the next meeting. S. M. George's accommodation license was granted. The meeting then adjourned. , Greytovn Licensing Committee. A meeting of the above was held in the Court house, Grey town, yesterday morning at 9 o'clock, when the Mayor, Mr B. A. Wakelin was elected chairman.
The annual meeting was held at 12 o'clock in the Court house, Messrs Wakelin (chairman), Bright, Wyett, McMaster, and Wood being present. The ordinary business having been despatched'tha question of licenses came before the meeting, when licenses were granted to the three hotels now in existence. The police reports were all favorable. No fresh applications'were received. The meeting, which had lasted about 10 minutes then came io a close. * ";■'"■=
