In the Baccarat case to-day, Mr I Wilson stated that Sir Gordon Cum- ' ming brought the counters to Tranby i Croft for the purpose of playing, and | witness was prepared to stake his life that plaintiff cheated. ■ June 4. At the baccarat case Mr and Mrs Lycett Green and Mr Berkeley Levett confirmed the evidence of Mr Stanley Wilson, It is alleged that there is a secret naval convention between Italy and England. Tbe Rey John Gott, Dean of Worcester, has been appointed to the Bishopric of Truro. Mr C. Haddon Chambers' " The Idgll" has reached its hundredth performance at St James' TheatreTbe various Agents-General, with the exception of Sir James F. Garrick, interviewed Lord G. F. Hamilton and Lord Euutsford to-day with reference to the Australian Squadron proceeding round Cape Leuwin on its way to Australia. Lord George Hamilton replied that naval advisers were unanimous in their opinion that it would be unsafe for the Squadron to proceed by the route requested, and they were unable even to consider a change of route. Sir Graham Berry siaid Australia was not likely to be pleased at the statement that the vessels were unable to proceed round Cape Leuwin. Lord Knutsford rntorted that tbe Colonies had received the class of vessels they wanted. Sir Saul Samuel said he had not received any instructions to object to the , proposed route of the Squadron, and therefore he made no objection, but he hoped all the vessels of the squadron . would visit Thursday Island, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. 1 Sir S. Griffith has cabled to Lord 1 Knutsford that he intends to ask the Queensland Parliament to sanction 1 the naval defence scheme.
