A PITIFUL CASE.
DESTITUTION IN THE BUSH,
The following letter has beenhanded the Pahiatua Star by Mr J. M. Connell, Village Steward:—Sin, As you were kind enough to ask me to state my trouble to you in writing, 1 now take the opportunity of doing so. I have now been ill for two years and could do very little work, and consequently considerably in arrears for rent, and could therefore have my lease cancelled at any time, This, of course, would mean ruin. For the last six months in consequence of my complaints becoming worse, _ 1 have done no work and tried to get into the Masterton Hospital, but was refused admission as my complaints were chronic and could be treated at home. I was given a bottle of medicine with instructions to diet, etc,, and sent home again. I have not been able to get any more m e diciue since then, nor can I live up to instructions, and have had to my ohanoe to live or die. For the last four months I have been assisted by the Charitable Aid Committee, which, although very acceptable, is not sufficient to provide me with medicine or to provide shoes or apy article of clothing for my wife and oliiidren, and I shall shortly have to keep my children from school on that account. At the present time we are in greater need than ever before, as we have to live for five weeks on four weeks allowance. I may add that neither my wife or children are able to earn anything, as the wife is not strong, and the children are too young, the oldest of six being a girl of twelve. [ think I have tola sufficient for you to see that at present we are in a bad fix, and powerless to help ourselves, and if it is possible for you to help us in any way we should be very thankful. I am, &c-, J. W*B£FOBP f l
