CORRESPONDENCE.

MASTE3TON AUDIENCES AND

THEIR BEJIAVIOUR.

[to the editor.]

Sib,—l have been present at many meetings and entertainments in New Zealand and England, but in all my experience I have not met with such bad manners as I have witnessed at Masterton. No public performance, no meeting, political, municipal, or any other kind, can be conducted without that catawauling, yelling, whistling, and shouting, to which we are so familiar. A most disgraceful example of the length in which this sort of behaviour can be carried was afforded last night, when, m our [Theatre, in the hearing of the whole audience—comprising a great number of children of both sexes—a lady performer was offered a most disgusting insult, the offender being ' promptly given in charge. Is it not time that the respectable and orderloving members of Masterton audiences asserted themselves to put down such acts, and so save the place from so evil a reputation ? If such misconduct is not sternly repressed no lady performer will feel safe in assisting at a public entertainment. Parents, too, will certainly object to hws their children exposed to such contaminating influences. I feel very strongly on the subject, but consideration for your space forbids my writing at greater length. I am, &c, " Loyee of Decency."
