On Saturday, at one o'clock in the afternoon, Mr. John Tully, one of the - oldest Woirarapa, settlers, died at his residence at Grey town., The demisoof •the deceased gentleman was not unexpected, as during the last week he had, been getting gradually weaker and weaker. Mr. Tully leaves: a large , family of four daughters and eight sona to mourn their loss.- Very great sympathy is felt for the family, in their bereavement. A very successful sale of household furniture and effects in the estate of the | late Henry Bunny, was held by Mr F. H. Wood on Saturday last. Buyers were present from all parts of the district, and the biddinp was spirited throughout 4 The sale started punctually at 11 a.m., and continued until after dark. TheJoUowirig pathetic incident of a recenlfcfire in New York has been recorded : A little child was about to be lifted in the arm* of one of the firemen, wherTshe drew back and returned into the dense smoke which was now pouring into the room. The -firemen saw her retiring, and shouted to her to come back, but as she did' not return they gioped after her, and found her gasping for breath and nearly She could not be persuaded at first to hurry away. She was dragging a doll's trunk, and said : " I can't leave it, my mother gave it to me." The fireman, in spite of the supreme danger, flung the box first through the window, and then took the girl down. The box, on failing on buret open, and revealed, not doll finery, but the deed for her dead mother's, grave.: The child is thirteen years BPupe;
