The hearing of the Edwards caso began in the App£jdjjffktf|(t'this morning, before Oniel ~.sssrcoT?rendorgast, nnd Judges Richmond, Williams, Connolly, and Denniston. A considerable number of spectators, including over a dozen ladies were present. For the Crown the Hod Mr Buokley, Attorney-General, Sir R. Stout, and Mr H. B. Vogel appeared, and for Mr Edwards, Messrs Harper, Chapman, and Theo. Cooper. Sir R. Stout opened tbY case, outlining the arguments he intended to rely on, and then pro* ceeded to sketch the constitutional history oi the position of Judges, which occupied the whole morning. Briefly put, he contends that Mr Edwards was appointed a Commissioner of Rative Lands, together with tho power of a Supremo Court Judge, and that the tenure of ouo office was to be deter* mined by the other, consequently, having ceased on March 81st to be a Commissioner, Mr Edwards also ceased to be a judge. Further, ha argues that if a Commissioner wetf» boyond the terms of the contract witb the Government it could bo rescinded and he will endeavor to show that it does so go beyond the contract. j rinlins a OUlft'i Body.
