BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held in the Chambers last evening, there being present:—His Worship the VI ay or, and Crs Eenall, Hessey, Dixon,|T. Chamberlain, Gapper, E. Chamberlain, Perry, and Eton. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Rev. J. Dukes and Mr H. Petersen, asking that their names be inserted on the Burgess Roll.—lt was decided that the names be inserted at the next meeting of the Council. From Wellington City Council, stating that the date of the Municipal Conference had been fixed for June 15th, and that free railway passes would be granted to delegates by the Railway Commissioners.—The appointment of a delegate was held over till next meeting. From the Secretary of the Town Lands Trustees, with reference to the water supply.—Received. From J. Billars, requesting permission to fence in a portion of Bentleystreet—Referred to the Works Committee.
From Sergeant Price, stating that application would have to be made to the district officer in Wellington for the appointment of a dog tax collector.—The Town Clerk explained that the Council would have to pay the constable. —On the motion ot Cr Gapper, seconded by Cr Dixon, it was decided to rescind the resolution passed at the last meeting appointing a Constable dog tax collector.
Prom the Town Lands Trustees, asking what would be the cost of kerbing the footpath in Hall-street. —Cr Renall thought the question might be held over till the water supply question was settled. From W. Sellar, Secretary of St. Matthew's Vestry, calling attention to the extraordinary amount of gas consumed in St. Matthew's Church for the monfh of April.—Held over for report from gas manager. Prom Messrs A. and T. Burt, with reference to a gas tank.—.Referred to the Gas Committee. Borough Pound. The poundkeeper reported fees collected for the month amounting to £1 Os 6d. Committees. ! The report of the meetings of the Finance and Works Committees was read and adopted. Okdinary. Cr Dixon asked if notice had been sent to the residents of Church street, calling upon them to make the footpath.—The Town Clerk explained that tlie notice would be given by advertisement in the usual way—lt was decided to instruct the Overseer to take the levels.
Cr Dixon stated that nothing had been done with regard to Columba road. There should be no delay, as the work was urgent.—The Town Clerk explained that plans and specifications had only just been received.
Cr T. Chamberlain asked why Renall-street oontract bad not been proceeded with.—The Clerk stated that tbe contract had to be completed by the end of June. Cr Gapper moved that the Town Clerk write to the trustees in Bannister's estate, asking for what amount sufficient land would be granted to widen Smith-street at Worksop road north. Cr Dixon seoonded.—Carried. THE BUR&ESS LIST. The confirmation of the Burgess List was held over till the next meeting of the Council. THE DYING COUNCIL. The Mayor stated that as this was the last meeting of the Council, he felt it his duty to mention that things had gone on smoothly. The conduct of the business of the Council had been harmonious. The petty quibbles had been greatly magnified. Cr Renall: Shall we sing Old Lang Syne ? (laughter). Cr Hessey pointed out that the " Star " in its last issue had grossly misrepresented the proceedings of the Council during its term of office. It was a great pity the papers oould not stick to the truth. The meeting then adjourned.
