Gisbor'ne, Wednesday, Rumors have been afloat for sonde time of serious defalcations in the '" ' accounts of the Harbor Board. At last night's meeting the- Finance Committee, which was appointed to go through the accounts, reported-that they had made an investigation which' revealed gross irregularities, aotual deficiencies which can be earmarked, and items aggregating to large sums that can almost with certainty ' reported as deficient. The examina"! tion of the Bank pay-in slips \ revealed that cheques were received for rates and not credited in the cash book. This system had been carried on from 1887 till the time of the late Treasurer's (John Bourke'e) death by drowning on April Ist. The last actual deficiencies traced amount to L 1519. The amount of the rates levied, out- ' standing, according to the' books, was LSIB4, and of this Ll6B has, during ~ , the investigation, been traced as apparent bringing the, total of alleged defalcations up to L 1692. The examination revealed so many irregularities as to make it a - matter of great surprise that s thtf*' acoounts passed the Audit Inspector without leading to such an investigation as would have revealed the true position of affaire. The Board resolved to obtain a legal advice on the matter. Mr/Bourke was also Town Clerk.
