ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Taratahi-Carterton Road Board was held on Saturday. Present— Messrs H. R. Bunny (chairman), E. W. Dorset, G. W. Delle>\ W. B. Allen, F. Gray, Hy. 8.-aithwaite, E. Morgan, James Stevens, and JN. Giace.
The minutes of the previous meet' ing were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported the bank overdraft at £l9O, and also read a statement of receipts since last meeting.
The Chairman, in a few remarks, drew the attention of the Wardens to the financial position of the Board, sta'ting that \vif,h the present overdraft and the accounts which had to be met they would have an overdraft of about .£SOO and he hoped the Wardens would confine the expenditure to only tho most important works.
Correspondence in wards.—From Colonial Treasurer, advising that the Loan of £SOO would be granted under the Local Bodies Loans Act after the usual conditions had been complied with. From Messrs Williams and Beetham, re the gorse complained of, and asking to be advised what would be the bast way to eradicate it. Resolved, that Mr F. Gray be deputed to find out the best possible method of destroying the gorse growing on the road sides.
From the in answer to a complaint made by Mr D. Carman. .Resolved, that a copy of the poundkeeper's letter be sent to Mr Carman.
From Mr Moore, stating that he was of opinion that settlers on the East Coast Road would be favourable to a Loan for the purpose of making the road to the Coast. It was resolved that Mr Brenwer be instructed to survey the road and give an estimate of the coat of the same,
From 0. H. Zabell, complaining that through the water being diverted on his property he had a lot of potatoes destroyed. The mutter was left to the Warden.
From Mr Cadwallader, asking information as to the obstructions complained of. Left to the Warden. Mr Baithwaite moved that the Suryey Department be asked to give a tracing of the road through Section 287, Waihakeke. Outward correspondenca was read from the letter book and approved. Tenders for metalling 12 chains Oliver's line, J. McUuinness, at lis per chain, accepted; 30 chains metalling Chester road, H. Rayner, at 23s per chain, accepted. R Sayer waited upon tho Board and asked permission to erect a gate on a road known as Bassetts. The application was granted on the usual conditions. In answer to a communication of the Bank of New Zealand, it was resolved that this Board limit their overdraft to £IOOO with six months rest, aud that Messrs Dorset and Baithwaite be authorised to countersign cheques in conjunction with the Treasurer.
Accounts amounting to £352 were passed for payment. ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting of ratepayers there were no complaints. The Chairman vacated the chair, when it wasmoved by Mrßraithwaite, seconded by Mr Stevens, that Mr H R Bunny be re-elected chairman to the Board for tho ensuing year. Mr Stevens, in vacating his office as warden, thanked the members for the kindness and courtesy shown to him during the time he had been a warden. The Chairman thanked the members for the confidence placed in him in re-electing him chairman and remarked that he was very sorry that
Mr Stevens was going to sever his connection with the Board.
The Chairman moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to their clerk (Mr H H Wolters) for the able raanuei' in which he had performed his duties and also tor the courtesy always shown by him to the members of the Board.—Carried. Mr Wolters thanked the members for their kind remarks and boped that the same good feeling would at all titnes exist amongst them. A statement of receipts and expenditure for the past year was read by the Clerk, and on the motion of the Chairman the accounts as read were passed, sulject to the audit.
