NARROW ESCAPE.

Woodville, Wednesday. The engine of the express train from Napier last night ran off the line, about a mile in the Gorge from this end. She ran about eight chains before being stopped. The front portion was supported by the ■ cowoatcher sliding along the rails. The escape from an awful accident was miraoulous. The front wheels' ran off just before crossing the bridge and knooked against sleeper at a distance of six incjß clear of the rails, the cowcatcjJK alone preventing the engine fronf being carried over. But lor this, the tntin would have beoa precipitated into the ravine bejienth, lliq engine was got on the rails by the use of jaoks, but ran off again before proceeding another 50 yards. A train was despatched from Palmerston, arriving at the scene of the accident about 8.20 p.m., and took on the passengers and mails. The driving rods were takon off the front wheels of the refractory engine, and the engine and train run back to Woodville.
