BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held in the Chambers last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Crs Reaall, Perry, E. Chamberlain, Cullen, Gapper, Eton, Dixon, T. Chamberlain and Hessey. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and adopted, outward correspondence was read.

C'ORBESPONDENCE. Inward correspondence was yeud as follows: From Treasury, notifying the payment of certain monies to the Borough fund account.

From W. Sellar, directing.'the attention of the Conncil to the fact that the water tables in Columba road would not carry off the surface water.—Referred to the Works Committee with power to act. From Rev. R. Wood, requesting that his name be inserted on the burgess roll.—Deferred till after the impending Borough election. From JI, Payne, culling attention to the dangerous condition of the footpath near his residence in Albert street, and suggesting that tko west end of that strnet be metalled.— Referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. From Railway Department, stating that the intention was that the existing crossing should be placed in the centre of the road in Renall-street. It was resolved thot the Town Clerk communicate with the Commissioners again on the subject and point out in as strong teims as possible the necessity of increasing the width of the crossing.

From Sergeant Price, stating that a constable was at the service of the Borough for the collecting of the dog tax. It was resolved to accept the offer, and ask the Sergeant to nominate a constable for the duties. From Mr C. E. Biemner, Btating that he quite concurred in the intentions of tho Council with regard to repairs to the Waipoua bridge. It was resolved that the work be referred to the Works Committee to carry out.

From the Clerk of the Wairarapa North County Council, signifying its willingness to contribute towards the cost of a morgue on conditions estimates are prepared.—Held over for report from Morgue Committee. From County Council ami Justice Department with reference to the fluming of water channels in Hall-st., the latter asking for an estimate of the cost.—Cr Renall offered to give an estimate of the work, and it was decided to accept this offer and (■.ommunicate tlie same to the parties interested.

From Z. M. Hoar, requesting per-, mission to remove the Volunteer Fire Brigade statiou from its present position to a site near the Temperance Hall.—Permission granted, subjeot to the building regulations. Water Supply. Tho letters of Mr M Caselberg with regard to the supply of water to his place were read, application being made that the work be passed, It was decided to deal with tlie matter after hearing the report of the Works Committee. Works Committee.

The report of the special meeting of Works Committee was read, together with the suggestions of the Committee fof the repair of the water tables conveying the water to Mr Casel* berg's.

The report was adopted as read. Gas Committee. The Gas Committee report was also read and adopted, Division of the Borough. The proclamation appearing in the Gazette, dividing the Borough in to three wards, was announced. Ordinary,

Cr Dixon asked why tenders had had not been called for the work in Columtm road.—The Clerk explained that the plans had not yet been prepared. The Clerk wbs instructed to warn contractors against filling up water tables.

Cr Gapper moved that the Works Committee take into considers ion the advisability of kerbing the footpath from the corner of Chapel street to the railway gates and report to next meeting. He considered this was tho only way of getting over the difficulty about the water. Cr Cullen seconded, and suggested that an estimate be also procured of the cost of asphalting the gutters. Cr Gapper was quite willing to add the suggestion to his motion. Cr Dixon stated that the widening of the footpaths in some parts would have to be taken into consideration.

The Mayor stated there could be no harm in procuring a report. Cr Renall was of opinion the kerb ing in moat places was unnecessaryc If the water tables were cleared ou there would be no overflow of water Some villain had smashed the works erected by him for the regulating ot the supply. Cr Cullen stated the idea in kerbing the footpath was to have it asphalted. Cr Gupper believed the footpaths would be a continual. nuisance until they wero kerbed. Cr Hessey agreed with the resolution of Cr Uapper. It was time the footpath was kerbed. „ The Mayor agreed,that road to the railway station was an important one and the footpath should be kerbed. The resolution was then put and carried. HOSE BOXES. Cr Renall moved, in accordance with notice given, that jor the bettor protection of the Borough from fire: hose boxes be erected near Dr Hoßk»' ing's, Miss Jeans', andMrCaselberg's The motion was adjourned to permit the Captain of the Fire Brigade to report. The meeting then adjourned.
