oamaru, April 27. There was a good deal of excitement to-day over the election of a Licensing Committee, The Moderate pa rty put forward five candidates,and tho Prohibitionists five, and the battle was between the two parties. It was thought tha struggle would be a close one, but the Prohibitionists were confident of TsueceßS, and, as the result proyed, their confidence was not misplaced. The Prohibitionista were elected on the understanding that they renew all the Hoenses in the town for one year, and thereafter no' licenses be granted. On the result of the poll being disclosed, th« ProhibN tionists held a meeting in the publio hall, where speeches were made. Ashbubton, April 27. Yesterday a boy named Spioer, rummaging in a chemist's buck premises, found a package of phosphorous in water in a sealed bottle. He took a stick and put it in one of his trousers' pockets, and while going along the street his olothes took fire. A passer by tore off the burning clothes and rolled the boy into the water channel and extinguished the fire, but burned his own hands, legs, and clothes. The boy's body was burned rather severely.
