ENGLISH. London, April 8. City financiers consider that an attempt to float the Victoria loan at a minimum of 99 will prove a failure. Obituary—Thomas Charles Baring Conservative member for the city of London in the House of Commons, ffitat 77. Mr Pond, M.A., a Fellow of St. John's, Cambridge University, has been appointed Professor of Classics to the Auckland University College, and le ives for New Zealand by the R.M.S Tongariro at the end of the month.
The Hon J. W. Forrester's article in the Nineteenth Ceiitury on the seamy side of Australia is attracting considerable attention. It describes propertyin the colonies as being at an artificial value, the outcome of unlimited credit,and advises persons who are thinking of investing in the colonies to do so with caution.
Owing to the limited response from the Colonies the Imperial Institute has abandoned its intention to hold a mining exhibition illustrative of metal work, jewellery and pottery, in which the Colonies are invited to take part.
