Carterton Sports.

The chief event in Carterton yesterday was the Athletic Sports and Football Tournament, held under the auspices of the Social Club. Fully three hundred people were present, the fair sex, of course, predominating, and including a great many visitors from Masterton. The attraction of the day was undoubtedly the events in the Football Tournament, for which ten teams had entered. Five of these teams were withdrawn before the day of the Tournament, owing to an intricate rule regarding" professional, ism," but it was still hoped the difficulties would be surmounted, and five different teams put in an appearance on the ground. A meeting of the captains was held, and it was finally resolved thit they would not risk the chance of being relegated to the ranks of '• professionals." It was arranged, however, that exhibition matches should be played, and the first to try conclusions were the Whareama and second Bed Star teams. The game was greatly enjoyed by the onlookers, and restated in a win for the Stars by two tries, gained by Hansen and Collier, to nil. Later on in the afternoon, the Carterton Rivals played a mixed team made up on the ground, and scored a rather easy victory by eleven points to two. Severs! races were ran off during the day, A. K. D'Arcy winning the principal ones, 120 yds. 220 yds, and 440 yds, in fine style.
