Mr J. R. Montague, of Palmerstcn, selling for Mr W. L. Kernahan, held a very successful auction sale in the Public Hall on Wednesday. The goods auctioned comprised all classes of ware and went off very freely at good prices. A change in the R.M. Court department is taking place. Constable Cooper resigns the Clerkship, and it '- -"derstood he will be succeeded by M U Ttr t ~*"-"°- For a good time Mr W.J. Jtiee... --% ftt the past Mr Cooper has ten, .~_ duties entailed on him as Clerk of the Court, in addition to those as constable, have been too multifarious for one man to attend to.

C. H. Ruthven, who was arrested in Christchurch a week ago for the larceny of a watch, was brought on to Pahiatua last night by Constable Cooper. Many of the potato crops about the district show signs of commencing to rot. It seems a great pity, as there are some really wonderful crops about. Mr John Hall, senr., in par' cular, has a vexy nice plot

which to all appearance will be drowned if the rain continues. The contracts for the formation of the balance or the main road through the town are well under way now. The street—3 chains wide—will now reach from end to end of the town, and if we can only get it planted as the rest is, will in a few years present quite an imposing and pleasing appearance. The trees already planted are healthy, and growing well.
