PAHIATUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

An old resident of the district, Mr Daniel Knight, having purchased the business lately carried on by Mr Walter Best, took possession yesterday, The public meeting in connection with the formation of a public Library which was advertised for Saturday evening fell through owing to the inclemency of the weather. The adjourned meeting was held on Monday evening, when a deal of discussion was indulged in as to whether the movement should be organised under "the Public Libraries Act" or " the Public Libraries Powers Act." Under the latter-, Act any ten persons could establish a Library, but under the former it would be necessary to take a poll of the ratepayers to adopt the act. One or two moderate minded gentlemen urged unanimity in the matter, no matter under which act it was formed, but finally a requisition to the TWn Board to take a poll of the ratepayers was drawn up and signed largely in the room. Mr John Robertson, builder, lost a mare in the Tiraumea river yesterday. The stream was in a high state of flood at the time and the mare in attempting to cross was swept down the river.

Now that the Gorge line •will be opened so soon, the question whether the Wellington mail should come on here direct after the arrival of the train in Woodville at 1.80 p.m. or whether it should be delayed till the receipt of the mail from Napier at 4.80 is being considered. In the latter instance both mails would reach here at 5.80 p.m, but only the holders of private boxes would 'get letters the same evening. The postal authorities here.it is understood, will recommend that ,the Wellington mail be des* patched here direct on its arrival in Woodville, leaving Napier mail which is far less important to the residents, to come by the first coach next morning.
