TRADES AND LABOR.

TROUBLES AT HOME.

STRIKES OF STEVEDORES.

London, February 24

The Orient Company are overcoming the difficulty of manning the Austral.

Upwards of 3000 stevedores are on strike.

The Shipping Federation is able to supply 2000 firemen, and it is pro - viding sleeping accommodation for t-hs men af the Dockq. Mr W. H. Smith states that the Labour Commission will enquire into the cause of the labour disputes, and whether legislation on the subject is possible. The co-operative contracts are working well at the Albert docks. 'February 25.

The Shipping Federation is doubtful whether the stevedores will obey orders.

The merchants fear the result of the threatened strike. Little metal, produce, or meat, has been unloaded for the past fortnight, owing to the prevalence of fog, and supplies are running short,

The number of free labourers available is increasing.

The stevedores havo withdrawn their manifesto under pressure of the Dockers' Union. The London Chamber of Commerce has invited the Shipping Federation and the various labour Unions to hold a friendly conference.

The Times is of opinion that the Commission to be set up by the Government should enquire to what extent strikes have a right to interfere with the hours of labor, and also to report as to the best means of averting strikes.
