Nine candidates were proposed for the position of trustees, including the Premier and Mr Seddon. Mr H. Blundell, of the Evening Post, Mr Macdonald, M.H.R., and the Mayor were elected. Mr. Sol&oa at Sawra.
HawKBA, Wednesday. "Speaking at Hawe'ra the Hod; Mrl 1 "' Seddon said the policy of the present Government could be summed up in two words—economy and progress. They advocated making roads to open A up lands. As to acquiring large estates the Government would do nothing revolutionary, but they saw no reason why they should not be taken for settlement purposes if the publio interest required them, on the payment of compensation., As ; to tneo[ surplus, all outstanding debts had not been taken into account by the lata ;. Premier. In one Department £II,OOO had turned up, in another £IB,OOO, -%. and he believed the surplus would be found a myth at the end of Maroh. Mr Bryce said he believed the Government did intend to borrow in ' the country later 0n,.. He contended he wished all borrowing to cease. It was a dangerous practice to draw » permanent loan from the trust funds. Mr Seddon denied the correctness; of I the inference that they intended to barrow in the country.. They could not afford the interest which would be required. It was not for him, however, to say'by what'-means they intended to carry on the works, Personally he was against borrowing'at all.
