en&lxsh. London, Felruary 13. Another murder has taken place in the Whitechapel district, similar, to those perpetrated by Jack the Ripper. The Northampton election took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr Mansfield, a Home Ruler, who defeated Mr Gei-maine, a Tory candid date, by a majority of 1713 votes. It is stated, ill connection with the Cumming scandal, that the Prince of Wales was watching the game of baccarat at the housa of Mrs Arthur Wilson, the well.known social entertainer, residing in the West End, when Bometbing aroused his suspicion regarding Sir William Camming's play. He privately communicated his suspicions to the hostess, who requested five of her guests to watch the play, and they declared that the suspicions of His Royal Highness were correct. The libel proceedings instituted by Sir William Cummins are against the five gentlemen who ware requested to watch him.
Baron Oscar Dickson, an influential Gothenburg merchant, expresses surprise that Australia haß not provided £SOOO in aid of the Antarctic expedition, and states that he himself will be responsible for another £IO,OOO. Baron Nordenskiford has definitely agreed to take command of the expedition. *
News has been received that the ship West Lothian, which left Sydney for London on December 17th, put into Pernatnbuco with her cargo on fire.
The Tim6s, referring to Lord Salis-. bury's answer to Lord Dunraven, believes it to be* rational, but considers that if a close political and commercial union resulted from the tariff, embracing the whole empire, there is much to say. in favor of facing the economic sacrifices.
