Auckland, February 5, In tlie case of the Queen v. Mackechnie, an action brought by the Cio*.vn against Mr E A Mackechnie, solicitor, to recover certain deeds which the defendant holds as a lien for costs due to liitn by the Kaihu Valley Railway Company in respect of certain lands over which the crown held a mortgage. Judge Conolly, in giving judgment, said the question for the decision of the Court was whether defendant had a right to detain tlie documents as against the plaintiff on the grounds alleged in the statement of claim. He bad come to the conclusion, although not without reluctance, that the question must be answered in the negative. Mr Hesketh, who appeared for the defendant, said he would probably appeal. A well-attended and enthusiastic) meeting of citizens was held this evening, when the following resolutions were passed:—(l) That on the oocasion of the Premier's first visit to "Wanganui Bince his appointment to that high and honorable position, the inhabitants, through a deputation, meet him on bis arrival at the railway station and present him with an address of congratulation ; (2) That a complimentary banquet be tendered to the Hon the Premier by the inhabitants bf Wanganui. The twenty-fifth annual meeting of the Christchurcli Gas Co. was held to-day. The balance-sheet showed the increase for the year to be £27,9] 6 14s Bd, as against £27,478 10s 8d for the preceding year. The balance to credit of the profit and loss account was £10,569 14s 4d, and the Directors recommend a dividend of 5 per cent, which, with a similar dividend declared in July, made 10 per cent for the year, and £569 14s carried forward. The length of mains laid to date is 59 miles ; number of public lamps, 554 ; and number of cooking stoves, 261. The Chairman mentioned that owing to the foresight of the Directors the loss occasioned through the strike was not so great as in the case of other gas companies.
