Removal of Constable Roaclio
[TO THE EDITOR.]
Sir—l saw a paragraph in your paper on the 30th instant referring to a petition presented by Mr Kellther to the Minister of Defence, requesting the', removal of Constable Roache. As no doubt my name is among the signatures, I beg to explain how it was obtained. I was at Elliston's hotel some months ago, and he presented this petition to me to sign. I asked him if it was a petition about his hotel, and he said it was, and 1 signed it, believing it to be a petition asking to have his license granted. I know several names were obtained through the petition not being read by those signing, and it being misrepresented to them. I am sure 1, with many others, would not have signed it if we had known its contents, aB we have no fault to find with Constable Roache. As many of us are illiterate men who signed it, I think designing persons making tools of us should be exposed. I am, &c,
