Serious Accident,
Oamaku, February 2. The express train, in coming into the station, struck a dray at a level crossing. Two boys were in the dray and both were thrown out, one escaping unhurt, but the other was badly injured. His loft thigh was broken, and he received a wound in the head. He is unconscious, and it is not known whether his scull is fractured or not. The name of the boy who was injured is Reid.
Distinguished VisitorsInvercargill, February 2. Archbishop Carr, of Melbourne, Bishop Moore, of Ballorat, and Dr Higgius, Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney, arrived by the Manapourj to-day. On arrival at Invercargill they were met by Bishop Moran and a large numbor of Catholics, who cheered as the diguitariea droYo off.
Suicide of a Farmer. Inveroargill, February 2. Edward Sutton, of JDrnaimond, one of a family of well known furrners in this district, was found dead this morning under circumstances indicating that he had committed suicide. Sutton, who was a single man, had been from home all day on Sunday, returning about 10 p.m., and about an hour afterwards a man heard the sound ot a gunshot from the direction of Sutton's house. This morning, as he did not _ appear, the door was forced, and Sutton was found dead in a pool of blood, with a discharged gun close at haud. A box had been drawn across the door, evidently to prevent admission. No cause has yet been assigned for the deed.
Sad- Fatality, CuniSTCHURCH, February 2. Two lads named Samuel Mardon and James Evans, aged 20 and 13 respectively, were drowned to-day through a canoe capsizing in the dam at Mardon's flaxmill,Upper Riccartou. No one witnessed the accident, but a lud passing saw the boat upset and one of the lads' arms in the water. He gave the alarm, when tho employes at the mill used every effort to recover the bodies. Mardon's father lot oft' the water from tho dam, soon after which the bodies were recovered. Indecent Literature. (Jmiistchurch, February 2. In the Resident Magistrate's Couit to-day Henry Message, who was convicted of distributing iudecent literature, elected not to appeal, and undertook to discontinue the practice. Mr Beetham orderedhim to be imprisoned until the rising oE the Court. Longfellow's Son. Auckland, February 2. Amongst the passengers to Auckland by the Mariposa wns Mr 0. A . Longfellow, a son of tho poet Longfellow, He is on a pleasure tour through the colonies.
