Greenway, who recently inherited a fortune of about ■£30,000. Greenway was sued by an Indian hawker for a sum of £42 for handkerchiefs, which it was claimed he had bought and given to women at houses of low repute. The defence was that on the day in question he was .W'drunk that he was unable to maktUlie purchase. The defendant.'* said that within the last two years defendant came into a large fortune,' and since that time he had been drinking and throwing money away most recklessly. Latterly he had been even worse than usual. He was unable to attend the Court that morning owing to his condition. The Conference between the City Council and the members of Parliament on the question of providing additional cemetery accommodation,was held to-day, but no conclusion was arrived at, the Councillors not being unarimous in support of the proposal to seek legislative power to extend the northern cemetery by taking in more of the town belt. Auckland, January 15. The Mayor of Auckland, Mr "Upton, has been communicated with by the residents of Huntley with a view of obtaining some assistance for the surviving sufferers by the recont mining accident. The Mayor has communicated with the Mayor of Dunedin with a view of ascertaining what are tbe remains of any surplus from the Kaitangata Relief Fund, towards which subscriptions were given throughout the Colony some time ago, and upon receipt of this information he will take further action in the matter. Tongaxi Affairs. Auckland, January 15. The Assistant-Premier of Tonga, Mr B. H. Thomson, who came up to Auckland on business connected with the Tongan Government, returned to Tonga by the Wainui last night with Mrs Thomson, who had been staying here for the benefit of her health. ■ Among other changes which ars to be effected in the adminstration of affairs in Tonga, the poll tax, which has been obnoxious to both Europeans and natives, is to be abolished, and replaced by a land tax. Each native adult will have a piece of land of fixed average
area, for which he will receive a Crown title, conditional on payment of the taxes. In the event of nonpayment of the taxes the land reverts to the Crown.
