A FEARFUL TRAGEDY

' A fearful tragedy occurred at .Wayerley, 33 miles from here, on t Christmas Day, resulting in- the death 5 of .a husband and wife, Mr and Mrs j Gallagher, They attended mass, and 3 returned home at noon, and about 1 t o'clock Mrs Gallagher was found dead 1 in her bedroor.} at IJUja,' Hotel, with 1 a gunshot wound inker left breast and one of her children clinging; to I her, and bedaubled in blood, Shortly . after, in the adjoining chamber, Mr [ Gallagher attempted suicide with a double-barrelled cbokebore rifle, Ho f failed, and then went downstairs and ' fired two shots. One glanced off his ribs, and the other entered the body below the heart and struck a watch in his pocket, the works of which were ; driven into the entrails, Ho lingered , conscious until 5 p.m, end. then .died. Mora death his depositions were * taken. He stated that ho murdered 1 his wife bocause ho loved too deeply j without being reciprocated, Four children are left, two boys and two ! girls. The cause of the fatal act is presumed to be jealousy. The husband , and wife had separated previously, i but their friends previous to the tragedy were hopeful that the couple | would live amicably together, An [ inquest is to be held at Waverley i to-day, c _ Turn, ' ' At the inquest on Mrs Gallagher tho evidence showed that the husband i confessed to committing the crime, I stating bo intended' to do the deed > forthalasf; three yeais, The I was that he loved her, and she. would [ not live with him. A verdict of wilful 1 murder was rotuvned against Charloa Gallsjlieri
