THE ELECTIONS.
. Kastsrtsn. . . !':■ The election of a member for the Masterton electorate' in the llouso of Boprcaeatatives took place yesterday, and reauUed in tko return of Mr A VV Hogg by a majority of- 21. All j business in- tbe town was practioally suspended'tbroughoiit the day, and the sold industry appears. to have been electioneering. The display of rowdyism was- very small, indeed to the usual egg and flour demonstrations, and the inmost good-feeling,.prevailed between .the supporters of the two ' candidates. Prom the'liour the bootli opened in Masterton (nine o'clooli) till the time of its closing, tuggies were plying toand fro,: and it. was thought that nearly 1000 votes-would be polled at the principal booths. It was therefore a surprise to a good many when it became known that the total number ■ reached only 775. In the bush distriots also the number: of votes recorded were comparatively small. This' was;nq doubt in consequence of the heavy rain which was falling throughout the; day. Shortly after six o'.clock a crowd began to assemble in the neighbour-, hood of the courthouse, and when the-poll was declared there must have been -several hundred persons present. The result. was received with loud cheering, as were also the returns, from the various other centres. When- the .last telegraphic message wae received, that from Aohonga,- and it wasted that the only return to oome (Bideford) couldnot materially affect Mr Hogg's chances, the cheering, of this candidate's supporters was- simply deafening,

The following are the detailed results at present known, These leave only one polling booth (White Rock) whose returns have yet to be received, l'hey can make no effective difference, and any they do mako it is considered will bo in favour of Mr Buolianan.

There was of course a small number of informal rotes, but they did not exceed the usual limited proportion of these blundering perpetrations. The aggregate number of votes for the whole electorate was less than at the previous, general election by about two hundred and forty five. Carterton was loss by ono hundred and ten, Grey town by seventy, and Feathorston by sliity five, The fact that Mr P,uch, anan'B rotnrn was so confidently expeoted by those who at all understood the position and prospects of the two candidates, has no doubt something to do with this, Iu one ease it would deter people who were at all oareless from taking the trouble to travel to the poll and record votes which/ their' representative by his evident majority would not evidently need, and in the other instance some at least must have recognised that their -suffrage would truly bo wasted in an ineffectual and uneven struggle. At the Carterton polling booth the voting waß very intermittent, and only twico during tho day, just before four o'clock, was there any sustained rush of'electors eager to reoord their convictions and their choice. The Deputy Eoturning Officer, Mr George Coker, was very prompt in making up his poll, and declaring the result, and his announcement was made within twenty minutes after six o'clock. About 150 people were present when the figures were displayed, and previously during the day the crowd had never exceeded this number, being generally about one ' hundred, persons. At night a few '■ {aromatic eggs were discharged by boys, but thero was no actual distur- i bance. The result of the poll was i quietly received at Carterton. i
