THE MAYORALTY.

. The following is. the result of yesterday's poll for the .Mayoralty of Masterton:— ~ G.S.W.Dalrymplo ... ... 6 J. Hessey- ... .„ ,„ gg C.A. Pownall ... ... .... 113 It will thus bo seen fekat Mr Pownall has been returned by a majority of seventeen votes. There is no doubt that to tlio enorgotio • efforts of Mr Pownall's committee this result is duo. From early mom to the very moment tlio" polling bootb was closed, buggies- were plying to and fro, "running thorn in,"and nostone was left unturned to ensure the return of tbe candidate who was familiarly termed the' young and inexperienced. 1 On the other hand, Mr Hessey's committee appeared to bold things too cheaply, and are almost deserving of the detcat they sustained, The result of tho poll was made known by tho Returning Officer shortly after six o'clock, and was received with cheers by the crowd who had congregated in the neighborhood of the polling boothMr John llesseyj in thanking the ratepayers for their support, Baid he was not sorry' thai he had been dsfeatedj because ho felt he was relieved of a lot of trouble. His only reason for contesting the election was that, having been some years a councillor, he was well acquainted with municipal matters, He wished to-tender liis sincere thanks to those who had voted in his favor, and also to those who had not. (cheers). ■ Mr-0 A Pownall, who ascended the Council door step amidst vociferous cheering, said be • was very much obliged to the ratepayers for the honor they had conferred upon him id returning bim at the head of the poll. Three years ago he came to this town a complete stranger, and did not even know (he driver who conducted him to his hotel. He now felt very proud that-he bad commenced bis career in Masterton. He hoped that notwithstanding bis "youth and inexperience" he would be capable of filling the Mayoral chair with credit to himself and the town, He promised to do his best to serve the ratepayers without any hostile feeling in. any direction, He hoped to come forward for bigger things in the future, and he trustod then to have the same success as now. He believed that Mr Hessey, his chief opponent, had conducted tho election in an honorable manner, and called for three cheers for this candidate.

The crowd having responded with lliree hearty cheers, a similar compliment was paid to Mr Pownall, and the assemblage dispersed.
