DEATH OF MR E.DIXON.
We regret to have to record the doalli, nfc an early hour this morning, of Mr Edward Dixon, ono of Wellington's oldest identities, Me Dixon was father of Mr Joseph Dixon of this town, and brother of tho lato Mr Charles Dixon, and besides having a large number of relatives, was well known and highly respected throughout tho district. The New Zealand Times, referring to (ho sad event, says" The news of the death of Mr EdwardDixoti, of this oity, will, we are certain, bo received regretfully by a great number of people in this Colony, for Mr Dixon was known and respected all ever New Zealand not only aB an old colonist, but as an excellent citizsn. Such men as Mr Dixon it was who, arriving herein the early days of the Colony, assisted to build it up and promote its progress. Mr Dixon himself came to Wellington in 1853 by the ship Eoyal Albert. On his arrival ho worked for his brother Charles, who held a small farm at Karori, and afterwards ho was for some time in tho employ of tho late Mr Peter Laing, of Lambton Quay. Then he started in business on his own account as a cordial manufacturer, his place of business being in Ouba Street, about whero Mr Hotop's chemist shop stands no«. For a great many years Mr- -Dixon remained there, gradually developing his business until it assped largo dimensions, A few years ago he retired to private life, having accumulated sufficient means to enable him to live in comfort independent of his business. Hecently Mr Dixon has weakened considerably, and on .Thursday last lie took to his bed for the last time, lift gradually sank, until at half past 2 o'clock this morning ho expired, at tho ago of G5, His family connections are large, and I his death will be received with regret by all who knew hiitt as a worthy i man and citizen. Mr Dixon occupied ] a seat in our.city Council as a practical candidate, and has given evidence that he had the welfare of tho city at heart by his vote and influence on 1 the many important questions which ] came beforo him. He was an en< , prickptef, and |i liberal subscriber to that as well a? all other institutions, As a member of St. Peter's Church ho was very regular in his attendance, and his labours and free-will offerings will be a monument as long as the church continues l " i
