EKETAHUNA.

(Prom Our Own Correspondent j A largely'-attended meeting of settlers was held in'tho sohool, Mailgaone, on Wednesday evening, to take intocousideration the'state of the road. After considerable discussion, it was unanimously decided to petition the Eketalmna Eoad Board to raise a loan of £7OO under the Loan 3 to Local Bodies Act, to'metal the road, commencing from about 28 chains east of P'osgrove's Saddle.,

Ellistou's Bailway. Hotel is now thoroughly finished. -On entering one is struck by the tasteful manner in which tin sitting worn is.furnished'. Thoro is another sitting room behind * the bar containing a.pianp for. those musically inclined. The dining room is large and well ventilated. Upstairs, the bedrooms are largo, lofty, and well and completely furnished. In oase of fire an escape rope is securely bolted under every window. In addition one door On the landing has the words, "Fire Escape" in large letters painted on it. On the alarm of fire being given boarders would simply have to open this door and walk down the escape ladder clear of th« building. I must confess that. Mr Elliston has spared no expense to make the house a comfortable one in all respects, and I have no doubt that he will secure a fair shire of patronage,

Esocutlon of Major Panitza.

[ Major Panitza was shot on Satur- , day morning, June 28, at Sofia. All the -telegrams desciibing the execution , report that lie met his doom bravely. Prince Ferdinand signed his death warrant on_ board ship, at Loin Palanka, being thea on his way to Vienna. Panitza went to bed on Friday night without knowing that ho was to bo executed on the morrow, On Saturday morning, at ten o'clock, ho was driven from tho house of detention to tho drill-ground of tho summer encampment outside the city in a closed carringe, A priest and'a gendarme wero with him. On arriving at the ground Panitza took the Holy Oouiniunion from the priest, said a prayer, and walked with a firm step towards a treo, against which he was told to stand. Tho whole garrison ot the csmp-that is, four regiments of- infantry, and one of artillery—were drawn up ■on the grouud, and Panitza, recognising several of tho officers, saluted them as he passed.' When ho readied' tha tree a sergeant stepped forward to blindfold him,; but. he took' the handkerchief from the man's hands and adjusted it himself, crying in a loud voice,, before he did so, "Long live Bulgaria?" Panitza was thea tiod round the cheat and waist to the trunk of the tree, and a firing party of twenty-one soldiers, commanded by _ a sub-lieutenant/ took up its position at twenty paces from him. The command was not given by word of mouth, but by stroke's of tho officers' sword, and at, the third cut of tho sword through the air the. squad fired. Death was inslantaneous, and 'subsequently it was found that all tho twenty-oho' bullets had struck. Immediately after tho execution the troops were mnvohed back to thoir quarters in companies, all tiling past tho trees where Panitza stood, half-fallen,- with his head drooping, When the corpse had heen exposed for au hour it was carried off the ground in a cart and handed over to the head man's widow. Mdme. Panitza did not hear that her husband was to bo executed until cloven o'o'ook on Saturday morning, when he was already doad. Tho remains of Major Panitza wore buried on Sunday afternoon i,i tho Cemetery of Sofia, his widow and a few friends only being present. There was no public demonstration of any kind. Frightful scones (says a Belgrade telegram) continued to be enacted at the grave of The" chief actors aria peasants whom uW dead man robbed during: the war. They have torn up tho turf and danced upon the gravo, Bhouting ; curses upon Panitza's memory; wbilo two men, whose sons he executed, burned candles and sang h/iunso£praise at the downfal of . their enemy, . . ■■^,
