EARLY CLOSING
(Tothe Editor.) Sin,—l was more than surprised ' j.' when I read in your yesterday's issue a local stating that a certain well- , ■■■' known draper had put up his shutters at six o'clock, and would lmvo douo so at the first had he not been subjected to certain threats.' Now sir, fair play is bonny play, and injustice J to the Association I write these few linos. I know for a fact that this certain draper was given every con- * sideration. Have not the Association ' been for five or six montli3 trying to . persuade this draper to close ? Have B not deputations waited on him time . after timi? And what was the result? • .He refused point blank to close and ' would not listen to reason. It was not c until the last deputation waited on 0 him and ho absolutely refused to close 1 gl at six the Association did resort to I A more definite issues. As for being ■ ■ mow neighbourly, the Association would no doubt only bo too pleased to bo so, and would have been from the first had the draper not used threats, for it was he who' used the threat and imperilled the hours of the shop assistants by. keeping open till 8 p.m., and thereby breaking the six o'clock movement which they ■ wero years in promulgating. I, for t w- one, am pleased to seo his shutters IT up, and trust that he will continue to close at six. As far as I oin see it is quite unnecessary for any shop to - keep open later than six, of course Saturdays excopted.-1 don't consider the Association deserve the censure contained in your yesterday's issue. Thanking for space,-! am, &c. Fair Play. [ln our last issue we simply gave Mr Bell's own explanation of his reason for putting his shutters np. We think "Fair Play," in the interests of the Association,, would have done well to have credited Mr Bell with some good intentions. We wouldliko.toseo a £,. little forbearance on both sides. .#~ -Ed. W.D.] . ,
