SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A special meeting of the Masterton Sohool Committee' was* held last evening, there being present Messrs Feist (chairman), McEwen, Eton, Easthope, Hoar and Daniells. The chairman explained the special object of the meeting, which was to consider the position of affairs as regards the closet accommodation at tho school. The contract for alterations was now in hand, and either the school would have to be closed for a month or they would have to provide temporary accommodation. Tlie contractor liad agreed to. undertake tho litter work for the sum of £4, Personally' he thought the Education Board should pay the cost of temporary provision. Mr Reynolds, who was present, stated that the closets would be ready for use iii about a month. The Chairman suggested that the temporary provision, be made and the' Board be OBkod to provide the cost. •- ■ ■ -■-' ■ ;'''• ■
Mr Daniells considered tbo matter was one between the coatractor and the Board.. It was evidently an oversight on the part of the architect, ■'■ The Chairman said itwas necessary for the Committee to take action, as the contractor could not go on with tbo work until the temporary arrangements were made. Mr Reynolds said ho thought there was an oversight. Mr' Easthope moved that the attention of the Board bo called to the omission and that they be requested to rectify it, as the only, other course open was to close the sohoclr Mr Daniells seconded profonna, but was of opinion that delay would place tbo contractor at a serious disadvantage The motion was put and carried. The Chairman Baid'anbther matter they had to consider was tho appointment of someone to clean' the school. Mrs Farqubar had signified her intention of discontinuing the work at the end of the month. A Mrs Dufrates had spoken to him about the office, and he had replied that the usual custom was to call for tenders. Mr McEwen thought it would be far more desirable that tenders be called. Mr yton was also of this opinion; they should be in a position to make a selection, Mr Daniells said the work was rather difficult and they should not cut the contractor down. Mr McEwen moved that applications be called for the position, Mr Eton seconded.—Carried, SCHOOL SITE, The Seorelary read the report of the Cominilteo of the Eduoation Board who recently visited Masterton to inspect, the sites for the | erection of a side school, Tho Chairman said that from the ' report received the Board had not definitely decided to purchase Wood- , roofe's site. The only objection ' U8 liaiV ■ W • aooepting ' Woodtoofo'o i 6ite was tho matter of filling in the ground. He did not think they could incur the expenses necessary, viz. } £75.
_ Mr Easthope: Who is going to fill j it up. Mr Eton did not consider ic neoesj sary to fill up the ground, Mr MoEwon; No, The Chairman said he thought it was very necessary that the hollow should be filled up. He believed the ( members of the Board had boon led . to understand from certain members of the School Committee that thoy , would fill in the hollow. , Mr Darnells: I understood Mr M'Ewen had promised to see the work done. Mr MoEwen; I did, but I after- , wards withdrew - . Mr Eton thought Ll2 or LH ' would be sufficient to fill up the 1 hollow. 1 Mr Daniells: There is filling and J filling. \ Mr Easthope. moved that the Edu- ; cation Board be requested to explain tho clause referring to tho hollow. This motion was not seconded. \ Mr Daniells then moved that the ' report be laid on the table, He did not think they had committed themselves. The Chairman said he thought from the report that it would be binding upon the Committee to fill in the hollow, Mr Daniells: But I am afraid if we have another division on' the subject the matter will be' hurig up," Mr Eton thought'tho report was that of qne'man only. ' ■ ' Mr Easthope: No,'it is the report of a ppmmittee.' ' Mr McEwen'; Decidedly not, tho Secretary then read the report whioh showed that it was from the Committee, Mr M'Ewen: Oh, I thought it was the School Committee, Mr Easthope said that if the report was laid on the table the -Board would do the work and the Commi!iw- Woll ld. liav© to pay the : £75. ■ ■ 'Mr Danieljs considered the Com- ( mittee had liovoibVih the matter, ■ : The Chairman said ho was quite i satisfied with the site, but they were j certaiuly not in a position to expend i £75. : ' ••■ j l \lt Eton was of opinion the less ' ooneeponrlerice they 'had on the i inatter'ih'e' hettetV' '•' '"'" ' ; !l ' j The Chairman did not tbiuk they i would commit themselves by stating | thoy could not fill in the hollow. < Mr Eton moved that the discussion j on the site question be held over till £ next meeting, ' j Mr MoEwen seconded. —Carried. 1 The meeting then/adjourned.'
