Bluff, August 11, .A fire ftcontred at 4 o'.clocji this morning, by which' a two-storied building occupied 'by Mr" Sutton, boardinphousokeopor, and Mr Kennedy hairdresser, was burnt. Nothing was saved by the oscupants, and Mrs Sutton was severely burnt, It is unknown how the fire originated, Mr Kennedy was insure;! with the New Zealand Company for £lijj). The inmates had" natrow escapes, firs Sutton and Miss Caygl|l Jumped through a window, Both were severely injured, and it is feared that Mrs Sutlouis injured internally. A boarder named Anderson was burned about jfie hands pdfaco.

Auckland, August 11.' ' A shocking fatality occurred at Wbakatup.e last, night, when Mr Charles Gould was accidentally sl:ot dead near his homestead, Oporiau station, He wbs getting through a' wire fence, pulling a loaded gun after him, when the trigger caught m the fence and the gun exploded, the bullet going through deceased's heart and causing instantaneous death. Mr Gould had just purchased a station from Dr Campbell, of Auckland, for LBI.OOO, and a fortnight ago left Tauranga to take possession; He canto from Napier shortly before, accompanied by his wife and .six children. He took a place in Tauranga for his family pending permanent arrangements, and proceeded to- the estate. For several yeara the'deccasod gentleman had occupied land at Wairoai His father came to - Canterbury in the early days of the colony, and entered into business in Christchurch, where he was very successful, One of the sous, Sir Joseph Gould, is still in Clicistclinrch, a member of the firm of Gould and Beaumont,

The calendar contains five oharges against four prisoners, three against Natives for forgery, horse-stealing and sheep stealing. The other charge is one of murder against Wm, Black, His Honor m his address' to the grand jury carefully reviewed the evidence, and left it for them to decide whether the evidence was sufficient to send the acotised to trial, Era- llaiigiwatia pleaded guilty to f irgory, and was sentenced to one year's imprisonment in Auckland gaol. True bills wero found against the other prisoners, including Blaok for murder. Kewi Kangitere for horse stealing was fotmd guilty.
