CORRESPONDENCE.
A Parable. (To tho Editor.) ' Sib,—Thero oarae a man from beyond the seas, to the valley of the rfL Wairarapa, and hia name was Joseph, and bo built a village and - called its namo Maslerton, and the . village grewito be a town, and it is ; called Mastertpi) to this day,-andin it are artificers in tin, wood, and a iron, expert fellers trees; and 0 leapers Of tho counter, whose business jPT it ip to sell, merobandisol' Arid it kme to pass >in the fullness of time ;'" that the Heapers ol the counter murmured; among themselves, arid said, one. ; to ahotheri.do we riot :froiri:tbe; rising' b£ the - r ?'" sun to the going down of the same,. : and ware weary and sick even unto deatli, : Go to, let us do so no more, - and theygath'ered themselves together as ono man and took counsel, and entered into a solemn league and covenant to-do so no more, but to " shut up" at six of the olook, And they made a law that all sellers of hard ware and soft ware, and all kinds of merchandise should" shut up" at six of the dock. And they said, let us call upon the' Scribes and -v upon the sons of Levi, even the parsons, and upon all those who ' lovetli their oliildren to help us, and they did so. And the sons of Levi, even the parsons, announoed in the congregation of the people, and the Scribes proclaimed from the housetops that all should help the leapers, of the counter. Bub a certain man whose name was B—, he not listen to tho sons of Levi, even--"" the parsons, nor to the Scribes, but held them in derision and would not - "shut up." And the wrath of the leapers of the counter was kindled against him, and' they said lo I this man whose name is B—- respecteth - not our law, even the law of the mob, neither will he shut up. Go to, let vs prepare a document, and let us command tho carriers of merchandise to attach every man bis name, And when they had prepared the document they said to the carriers' of merchandise, Mold, we show you this day a blessing and a curse, a blessing if you Bign document whioh we command you this day, then.it shall be well with you, ye shall eat and bo filled; bat' y acurso if you refuse. We will not l give you any work, neither shall ye - oarry our merchandise; your wives . and little ones shall ask for bread and receive a stone; your horses shall neigh in tho. stable because they have no provendor, and your chariot wheels shall v rust,, yea they shall fall to pieces for lack of work. So thoy bowed the hearts .of the carriers of merchandise as tbi%\ heart of one man, and they attaohed.T ' every man his name, and at the sound of the trumpet and the sound of the drum they gathered' together a great crowd and the mob lifted up their voices and cried with an.exoeedingly loud voice let us revengo ourselves on this man who' breaketh" our decree. And they made an image like unto B— the height thereof and the breadtb thereof were like unto B—, and at the sound of tho trumpet and the sound of the drum they offered it up as a burnt offering, and their wrath was appeased, and they departed each one to his own place. (To TIIE EDITOR,) Sir—l notioe that the members of the Masterton Early Closing Abso-, , ' oiation are' making strenuous to put down late shopping. A demonstration has beeu held in order to assist them to bring their necessary object before the public, and other means devised oaloulated to further their oause. Opinions differ as to their modo of procedure. The question arises—Who are their obstructionists, and what excuse oan their obstructionists adduoe to show • why_ they should still persist in continuing this antiquated Bystaui of keeping open lata to the detriment of somo eighty shop assistants? Mary, Anne, and Jane have been flaunted before the publio as the delinquents. But, Mr Editor, if wa look for a while at our domestic servants we cannot fail to admire in this the nineteenth centu'fy their ohoioa as regards their style of dress, their taste in the blending of cplors, and their general neatness," Our domestic servants do not shop late, They like to see what they are buy. ing. Who then are the divertera from the paths of the early shopping rectitude? This is a question mora j diffioult to answer than will not pretend to s|lve it,' but would suggest to'-',.,those-tradesmen who are in - the habit of keeping their shops open to.a late 'V«' hour that they shouldfall in with tho six o'clock movement, and then there would be no occasion to query as to who are the divertera, It seems '•' hard on our shop assistants that their equanimity should be disturbed by anyone coming into this town and in the face of our hitherto settled hour of closing openly contrayert the Early Closing Association rules. The Association, I understand, do not begrudge any tradesman a fair share of patronage, but when'it.obmes to a point when their dosing hour is in danger of being reverted to the days of fifty years agp, then the only thing' to be done is to take measures not calculated to give that tradesman nmch peace of mind and conscience. j trust, as an outsider, ■ that the heroes of last Friday's demonstration Will.no longer tranßgross the rules of , tile Early Closing Association. Then (L tho public will accord them that r . measure of support which they will then deserve, • * , lam.&c, - Observer,
Messrs Lowea and bras add to their "sale to-morrow 20 pair of fowls prizo takers at tho late Poultry Show. A writ is, we understand.abonb toba iß»uod_ by Mrs Gordon, of the Argyle Boarding-house, acainsta man named Steadman, for an alleged libel contained »letter forwrdei to her.
