MASQUERADE BALL.
The annual plain and fand.» dress ball of the Greytown Private Sand was held in tbe Palace -Hall last evening, and was a success beyond degree. The floor was occupied by about 150 couples, including visitors from all parts of the Wairarapa, and iti the gallery there must have been fully 800. spectators.. The amount taken at tbe door in' cash; alone was £BO. The hall was decorated in delightful manner with fiaga, ferns; and evergreens. Mr 3. Haigh acted as oashier, and Messrs F. H. '.Wood, J, Maguire, J. Lucona, aud A, L. Webster' as M.O'a, carried through ■ the lengthy programme - of twenty three dances and two extras without ahitoh. The floor was in really good condition. The- refreshments were superintended by Mesdames' Fuller/' Walden, Dunu, and Miss Dunn, assisted by Mr and Mrs W E Thompson and Miss Thompson. Excellent musio was provided by the band, which was comprised of Mr B Yarnham, olarionette, (conductor); Miss' Morris Wood, piano; Miss J Wood j and Mv Stowell, first violins; Mr J. £ Maguire, comet; aud Mr A Barnard double bass. Masks were worn for the first three dances. The great success of the ball was duo in a large meaaure to the admirable administrative abilities of the joint secretaries, Messrs H Walden and J K Nicol, who left nothing undone which would contribute to the success of the gathering, The following'is a list of the most conspicuous fancy costumes: " Wairarapa Standard," Mrs J Dew; v "Indian .Queen," Mrs Urquhart;#'\ !'
