The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, JULY 20, 1890.

On Friday last tlio Early Closing Association of Masterion made a demonstration on behalf of the cause, Ihe members of that reform society took possession of Queen-street and serenaded a certain draper, who refuses to be " one of them." For a short time the centre of the town was a pandemonium, but the result of the demonstration does not appear to be any distinct advantage to its promoters. The obnoxious draper appears to have taken good humouredly the attention bestowed upon him, and we are not sure but that ho feels half an inch taller as the h»ro of the play, and as the recipient of a gratuitous advertisement. The police do not like the proceedings and threaten reprisals, but it is doubtful whether thoy could mako out a case against thole ders of the Association who instigated the row. It would of course be absurd for them, to proceed against sotte small boy in tho croud who might havo misbehaved himself, aud allow tho ringleaders to escape, and this is just the position they havo to face. The ringleadois engaged a brass band and provided jnusjefor tl|e occasion, but it does not app»ai< that they did more than this, and it would be difficult to bring home to them any illegal act. Still, if demonstrations of a similar kind recur, it will be absolutely necessary for the poliac lo take action in some shape or form, We fail, however, to see what good result is to be gamed by them. What is the real difficulty which stands in tbo'way of the early closing movement ? As we understand it, there is a sn)all li'it legitimate defend for late shoppiug on the'part of doniesii: servants. Mary Ann, or Jano, as tho case may be, has hi r night out once a week, She is perhaps free from soven to lon p.m. on one evening only, and that evonitig she cannot choose, but lias to accept the particular night on which hor mistress can spare her. Can any reasonable person blame tyuy Ann, or Jane for shopping late under such clrcnuiBtances, or can nny reasonable persou censure a tradesman who takes up the position tint a certain nunibor of his oustpmcrs are obliged to.sjiop late and therefore it |'b to Ms interest'to snpply their needs. We are entirely on the side of tho early closing movement, but we do pot belieyo its interests will be promoted hy boycotting oither domestic servants or the tradesman who supplies their requirements. We would rather see the members of tho Association go to work in a more reasonable manner- We do not believe that domestio servant would necessarily indulge in late shopping if they had reasonable opportunities of making tliejr purchases earlier, and wo do not believe that the tradesman who supplies them would sooner serve them after six than before that hour. The responsible persons in this lute shopping business are clearly the mistresses, and we fail to . see why foe Association should not recognise tbh} fast and endeavor to bring about 1 gome srrangeipqnt hj which the requirement* of all parties might bpj conceded. Had wo the honor to bo a working member, of Alio Wy

Closing Association wo should eri deavor to promote a meeting, of mistresses to discuss .the best mums of giving domestic" servants reasonable i f.icilitios for making their purchases without trenching on lntohouia. The very strongest nlly the Early Closing Association could make would bo' a Conimiitco of ladies, Wo do not believe in boycotting or in open air demonstrations of a larrikin character, but wo have'faith in a good eausn being advanced by reasonable means. The Association has done good work already by bringing under the notice of the publio tho fair reasons on which it seeks to bring about a reform and it has enlisted the sympathy of the public to a considerable dogrco by such action, bu*-- it will only injure its causoifit attempts to appeal from argument to force. Its right policy is to secure the co-operation of the public by friendly persuasion and it need not wo fetl sure, despair of Success if.it adheres to this perfectly legitimate and very effective modo of procedure,
