BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough; Counoir was held last evening. His Worship the Mayor, anil JOrs Perry, Mason, Gapper, Mo'Eweu, T. Chamberlain, Dixon, E, Chamberlain,and Hessey. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CoiIRESPONDENCE.
From J. Hare, applying for transfer of cottage from himself to W. Kite.—Bequest grantod on condition that rent in arrears be paid. From the Secretary of the Benevolent.Society.thanking the Council for the nee of tho Chambers for meeting purpose From Mrs McKenzio, stating that the Council' had encroached on her land in Chapel Street. Eeferredto the Works Committee for report. From E. H. Waddington, calling attention to state of footpath in front of Foresters' Hall, and asking that it be repaired.—lt was resolved that the request be granted. From Medical Officer, reporting one case of typhoid fever. From a number of ratepayers in Cole Street, requesting that a lamp
be erected at the west end of that stveet,—Ct Dixon said there were only, three consumers of gaa in tho street.—Or MoEwen thought that if the petitioners were each to put down their names for gas they, might 'grant the request.—Or Mason moved that the request be acceded to. He thought this would encourage them to take gas in their private houses,—Cr Mcfiwen seconded,—The Mayor thought the case should be decided on its merits. —Cr Perry explained that thore wore many streets in tho town which required lamps more than the one in question, - Or Dixon would not mind the request being granted if they could rely on getting three new consumers, His WorshiptheMayorsaid that this street was lighted as well as most streets in the Borough, and if they granted the request, many other applications would be received for lamps. —The motion was put and lost on the voices, .. Onmum Subset Footpaths. Messrs Murray and Hogg, residents of Church Street,, waited on the Council and oxplained that footpaths ' were urgently requited in the neigh; bourhood of their residences, as the ' roads were in a fearful state. Mr Hogg, in referring to the matter, [ stated that Sergeant-Major Bezar hac . been going to his house one evening J and was practically stuck in the mud; ] whilst his companion, a local brewer had been floundering about inthi mire for some time. Tho 'bussei would not go down the street and thi butchers' could not get to the house! with their carts. He was quite willinj I to contribute towards the cost of form
ing a footpath. Mr Murray staled that a Councilloi who had been down the street that he had no idea there was a stree
in the Borough in such a state. He was quite willing to contribute towards the cost of the work. The Mayor said it was to be regretted, that the street was in its present condition. Its state was no doubt caused by the late contract not having been finished.. He would move that tho Works Committee be empowered to spend such money on the street as they consider necessary. Cr T. Chamberlain seconded. He had'not seen BuctTVstreet outside ot the Forty-mile Bush. He had gone np it tho other evoning.in hie buggy, and lie almost sank out of Bight. The Mayor: You would not go out of sight! Cr Chamberlain: No, I would not, but notwithstanding, the street is in a bad state. Tho motion wa3 put and carried, Works Committee,
The report of the Works Comniitteo was read and adopted. Gas Cojimiitke.
The report of the meoting of the Gas Committee was read, which showed that the quantity of gas manufactured during the past month was 187,650 feot, an increase of 36,385 feet on the same period last year. The lamp had been erected at the gates of the railway station, and wot metres wero recommended to be purchased. It was also recommended that coke be advertised for sale in. the local papers, The report was adapted, KIRE BIUGADE,
The report of the Fire Brigade, recommending the voting of £lO towards the erection of brigade shed at Kuripuni, and the granting of 17s Id to Captain Pickering, was read and adopted., PUBLIC LIBRARY. The ■ Library Comniitteo recommended tho expenditure of 88s in purcbaging books from Mr Lines, stationer, The recommendation was adopted, OVERFLOWS OF WATER,
The Overseer reported that the water at the Chapel Street dam of Mr Thompson's had overflowed and flooded the adjoining property and streets, .-...'
It was decided that uotico be given to Mr Thompson to remove the obstruction in his property.. ' The Overseer also reported that a culvert in Bentley Street, which was blocked up, was causing an overflow of water. It was resolved to instruct tho Overseer to put in a new ooutract, ORDINARY.
Cr Dixon called attention to the fact that Worksop road needed repair.
Cr Hcssey asked that the Overseer be instructed to inspect Boundary road. The Mayor said ho would see that tho Overseer attended to the matter, TENDERS, The following tenders.wero received for tho formation of footpath in Queen Street:—M Kerins, 114; Cavanagh & Co, £l2los, The tender of Cavanagh & Co was accepted, TOWN CLEBK'S ANNUAL-liEPOUT, l'ho annual report of tho Town Clerk was laid before the Council and considered, • regard to that portion referring to Bishop's reservo right-of-way, tho Mayor moved that tho Town Clerk bo instructed to endeavor to arrange matters between Messrs Perry and Benall, ' Cr Hessey seconded.—Camccti

Some discussion took place trponthe defects reported in the weight of coal, supplied to the gas-works, and it was resolved to ask the Grey Valley Co, to woightheooalouthe City weighbridge and Qovernnient
weighbridge as a teat of the reliability of the latter,

Chamberlain said he would lilie to see the use ot gas stoves encouraged, as it would cause ■an incroasein the consumption of gas. they should lower the price of the stoves so- that househouldora would be induced to buy. ■ • Ho would move that the matter be referred to the Gas Committee. , ■ CrMcEwensecondefl-Carried, , The Library Bate. Or Mason seconded the motion pro • forma. There was a good deal it what Or Dixon had said, but at the Bame time there was. a diffoulty in procuring a variety ofboolis. 'He' would not, therefore, support the motion. , ' The Mayor thought the step proposed by Cr Dixon would entail a deal of expense, as a number of books would require to be purchased. Cr E. Chamberlain would prefer, that the library rate be done away .. with altogether. There were plenty who contributed to the library-rate • ■ who never had a book. .The motion was put and lost on . the voices. '■ The meeting then adjourned.
