Tlie Farriers' Union. (To tub Editor). Sir-It is to be regretted that the farriers of the Wairarapa decided to combine together to fix the price of their work by Unionism. I should likoloknow what permanent object iis to be gained by a stereotyped standard of prices, I think none whatever. The purpose of the Union appears to me in direct opposition to the laws of supply and demand, The natural- law in trade is freetrade, During a part of the year the cost of the material used must fluctuate in price, at times higher, then lower, and with a fixed price for their work means at one time making less money than at another. Why not abandon the'position now taken up and adopt a universal system of cash, (jiving. credit to no one, thereby saviug a large percentage of what- is now, with the credit system, lost,and' which is a serious disadvantage to the oustomer.'who pays for his work. The cash system could be worked out to the advantage of the seller and purchaser,-/and would not' cause friotion between the employer : and employed. '• The price of work then charged would be regulated by cost of material and the labor employed, Unionism to relegate the hours of labor I think must be gsod, but let the cost of production relegate the price charged the consumer.
