MEETING OF SETTLERS.
Tho Question of Farriers Ohargos. A Co-operative Company Formed. Tho adjourned meeting of settlers to receive the report of the Committee appointed to interview the farriers of Masterton on tho qiieslion of reducing the charges for shoeing was held in the Club Hotel on Saturday last at three o'clock. About sixty settlers were present and tho chair was occupied by Mr James Stuokey. The Chairman explained that they' wore mot together in accordance with a resolution passed at the meeting hold on Saturday last, As tho mouthpiece of the Committee ho would say what had been done. At 130 o'olock the oommitteo had been met by a committee of the farriers, who had submitted an alteration of their tariff, They proposed sending out accounts on tho first of each month, and all who paid within ten days of receipt of same wore to bo charged as follows i—■ Hacks, (is; ordinary draughts, 7s; draughts with toes turned up; 8s; entiles in season, 10s; one shilling apiece to be oharged for removes, and a shilling extra on all young horses. The proposed reduction-had not been submitted in writing, but ho. had taken notes at tho interview, It was now for those present to consider whether the charges made were reasonable. If the meeting considered they were, no doubt all would bo satisfied and pay tho prices asked, But if, on the other hand, they considered 'he revised tariff too high, someone would doubtless move to this effect, and an amendment to these charges would be made, Personally, be would prefer to see some arrangement made witli tho farriers, but if they were unreasonable the only qourse open wpuld bo to form a company. This would bo a great thing for the district, and would; bea means of introducing unity in tho Wairarapa so far as the settlers were concerned. (Hear! Hear |) . Mr Lett did not think the tariff submitted was satisfactory in any respect. A man shoeing twenty horses should have a concession ovar those shoeing but ope. Besides, he could not see why a man«ho had a young horse shod should be charged extra, for the farrier who shod it had always the privilege of doihg so again, He would move," That tho tariff submitted to this meeting, furnished to ! the committee'by the.farriers, is not considered ektißfaotory, arid we request the'. Committee chosen-at the last meeting to take' steps to form a' company to carry-on farriers' ,and ; wheelwrights' business under the" Limited LiaWlitiou A«t." (Hetiv-
... MrJames McGregor secondedr Mi' .D,. Carman suggosted that instead of putting the resolution into effoot. tlioy lot their work out by tender to tlioso willing to do it. " He wiiuldnoti however, in face of the feeling of the meeting, move an
amendment in this direction, Mr Hessey: The' farriers-, have y price fixed by the- Union and the cannot acpept work at less. • Mr Carman thought ■ there wore men in the district who would be willing to do their worlt—those who were non-unionists.
Mr Hessey said he would support the resolution. He did not, consider the reductions made were satisfactory, The price charged was exorbitant, and by the proposal the -fiimpra" now made they were practically sticking to their old arrangement (hear ! hear!) The Chairman said it had been suggested at - the last meeting-that the farriers might communicate their decision in the matter to-the committee. The farriers had met the committee, and in their proposed naw tariff they considered they were making a very great reduction on the prices advertised. In his opinion however, the cbargos were higher than they were before being advertised, In passing the resolution before the meeting they were taking a grayo step, .and one that would influence tho whole district. None of
them knew anything about the trade, and thoy would have to depend upon those -in their employment. If, however, the meeting said the thing was to be done, it would be, aud done well at that, Aa ho had said
before he would like to see a thorough combinition of tbe settlers in the Wairarapa. In Ohrislchurch they had a very extensive Farmers' Association, which wielded an immense influence, and nobody reading the report of tho annual meeting recently kid, could fail to see the benefits of such an institution.
The motion was tlion put, but one dissentient called for a show of hands. Oh this being taken, about thirty hands were raised in favor of .the motion, and none against, so that it was declared carried unanimously. The Chairman said the committee appointed had held, a meeting, and proposed that a company bo formed with a capital of £IOOO, being 1000 shares at £1 each, half of which was to bo called up in instalments, so
that £SOO would ba procurable for making a start. It had also been decided that with a viow to making tho company as widespread as possible no shareholder would be permitted to. take up more than twenty-fivo shares, Ho would now bo glad to receive the names of intending shareholders. Before the room was cleared nearly 800 shares had been taken up, At a meeting' of tho Committee held subsequently, Mr O. Pinkerton was elected clerk, pro km, and a sub-committee was appointed to wait on Mr Gawith, relative to the legal 1 business in connection with forming tho Company. A site Committee was also formed,
consisting of Messrs T. E. Chamberlain, Guild, McGregor and Hessey, for the purpose of considering the applications for sites, tho Committee to report to a meeting of tho General Committee' to be held at tho Eoad Board Chambers on Thursday,
