SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The Miliary monthly meeting of tho Masterton Scbool Committee was held last eyeniii£, there being present Messrs' B, Feist (Chairman), (J. E. Danielip.W. Prangnell, H. E. Eton, W. M. Eastbope, and McEwen. . The minutes of tho previous meet, ing were'read and confirmed, Tho Treasurer reported the receipt of a grant of £2O from' the Education Board, leaving a debt balance of £ls 41a sa. .•■■.;. . .CORRESPONDENCE,
A letter was read- from the Education Board referring to the" sites for the proposed infant school, and stating that a committee .would visit and report.... < -
■■ A communication was also road from the Board with reference to the classifying of school book?. '
From Mr G.M, Wood, referring to the state of tho eohool closets, and urging thai immediate improveni'mt be made, as at the present time they were flooded with water. It was decided to allow the matter to stand over until it was known what the Board intended doing in the matter, 'RESIGNATION OF MR HACKAY, MrThomas Mackay wrote, ; ten' dering bis resignation as a member of the Committee, as his duties called himoutofthetowu. The Chairman remarked that Mr Mackay had been a useful member of the Committee, and all would regret bis early retire:' ment. .. The resignation was accepted .with regret, anion the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Prangnell, it was decided to nominate' Mr Z, Hoar for the vacant seat.
FINANCES, The Committee appointed to visit tho school with regard Ho the Town' Lands Trust vote reported the works necessary to be undertaken. Mr Baniells. called attention to the fact that the Committee wero .low praotioally over £3O in debt, and they Bhoud make some effort to improve their position. Mr Eton said that in his opinion the Town Lands Trust had been usod in the past as a milch cow, and ,the Committee had overstepped the mark, Mr Prangnell thought there were many ways in which they might economise,
The- Chairman said he would like ioseo the Cadet Fund put right. Mr Eton asked what the income of tho school was.
The Secretary replied that £BO a year was received from the capitation fund and £SO from the Town Lands I Trust.
Mr Prangnell said it appeared to him that the Committeo were asking tho Town Lauds Trust for .£65 and the Education Board for nothing, The. Chairman replied that the Education Board were at any. rate going to repair the closet 3 and paint the school.
Mr Prangnell would like to know if thoy could devote the grant of tho Town Lands Trust to any purpose they liked. ' Mr McEwen was also anxious on this point. -Mr'Eastliope thought it was a duty to get out of debt as speedily as possible, and especially to get rid of tho debt to tho Cadet Fund. It was eventually decided to leave the. application to the Trust as it at present stands, and the disoussion was postponed till next meeting. Mr Eton was. .appointed visiting member for the month, aud tho meeting then adjourned. •
