BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough, Council was held last evening. Present—Crs Mason (in the chair), Perry, E, Chamberlain, T. Chamberlain, Dixon, and Hessey. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, CoRBESrONDENCE. From North Wairarapa Benevolent Society, requesting use of Council Chambers for meeting purposes. On the motion'of Cr T, 'Chamberlain the request was 'granted.-'-From Colonial Secretary, re valuation. -Keceivedr
From Dr Hosting,, reporting several.cases of scarletina within the Borough.—Received, and the attention of the Inspector of Nuisances called to the same. ' From Messrs :A. and T. Burt, Dunedin, quoting prices for gas meters. It was resolved that the meter required be procured. . From Masterton .. Town Lands Trust, slating tha| a part of section iii Kuripuni; had been granted the Council for Fire Brigade purposes, On:tho motion of Or Perry it was : decided that the offer be acoepted and the necessary deeds of title be drawn tip by the Borough Solicitor,,

Messrs Boss and Muir wrote, making an offor'to build a new iron tank for the nißhtcart, for the sum of £l9 10s. The tender was, on the motion of CrT,.Chamberlain, accepted.

UrDixon moved that'all ratepayers contributing 6s 8d and over to the library fund, bo exempt from subscriptions, and that ratepayers subscribing £1 and .oyer, be given; a double privilege, He thought it was only fair that ratepayers should be given the privilege of obtaining books from the library. •:■■ v ', The Chairman thought that it was necessary that notice of: motion be given in the matter.

Captain Pickering, of the .Municipal Five Brigade, waited on ;the Council, and reported that,he.had procured from the Town- Lands Trust a suitable sito for the ereotiou of a lire brigade shed at Kurupuni. He had also received from that body a donation of £10; towards the cost; of erection of the building, and he wished to know if the Council could see their way, .dear. ; to make a donation. Tlie cost of the building would be about £7O. Tho fire insurance agents would no doubt assist naturally,. •■'.,;■.'.., •: • Cr E. Chamberlain thought the matter should be considered by the Fire Brigade Committee.
It was eventually decided that, the question of granting a subscription to the Brigade be considered at the next meeting of the Fire Brigade Committeo, and reported to the Counoil. REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET, The discussion on, the annual report of the Town Clerk was'furttor adjourned till next meeting. LEAVE OP ABSENCE, . . On the motion of Cr Hessey, seconded byCrE. Chamberlain, leave of absence was granted to His Worship the Mayor. . FENCES IN RENAIMTEEET, The Town Clerk stated that hehad seen parties interested in the fences abutting on Benall-street, and although their leases lnd not expired they were willing to allow the Council to remove the fences, Tne Council then adjourned.
