TEMPERANCE SOCIAL.

A very pleasant social gathering of the friends of temperance -was Held in the Temperance Hall last evening, when, despilo the, threatening nature of the weather," there was a good attendance The tea meeting, which was held at six o'clock, was a gre&t success, a large number sitting down to tables laden with everything that was good. The ladies connected with the organisation were particularly attentivo to tho wants of visitors, and deserve great credit for the manner in which tha whole arrangements were oarried out,

At the free concert following the C9a, the hall was crowded, tho chair being occupied by Mr E, Feist, A lengthy programme was submitted, the whole of the items of which wero well received. Deserving of more than passing mention were the recita : tions of Miaa Powell, a young lady of about twelve Bummers, and tho songs of MrG. fl.' Gaskill, who has returned to Masterton from Blenheim. The following is the programme presented : Selection, string band; song, D. Buckingham; recitation, Miss Powell; piano solo, Miss Pearson; song, H. Beose (encored); address, EevW. Bowse; song, G.H. Gaskill, (encored); address; T. Collier; song, Miss 0, Corbett; selection,-string band; recitation, MiBS Powolljsong, R. Temple; address, Mr Buckingham; song, D. S. Papworth. The proceedings were brought to a close in tho ÜBual way about ten o'clock. ■
