The Very Eey, Dr McDonald, a well-known Roman Catholic missionary amongst the Maoris, and brother of the Very Eev, Monsignor McDonald, died on Sunday at his residence, Hokianga, after a short illness. The deceased priest came to this colony in 1851, and was VicarGeneral of Auckland when Dr Pompallier was Bishop, He afterwards went to the Waikato, and there took charge of the Maori Mission as Vicar Apostolic

Dunedin, July 7. At q, Bpeoial meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day a resolution was carried by ten to three, '< That this Chamber is opposed to the re-imposition of the primage duty! tax, on the following grounds i—(1)1 That experience has shown-that its incidence is unfair, seeing that in a great degree jt falls solely upon the importer; (2) That the- principle of re-imposition for fresh purposes as a special {ax levied for a special time and apeoial purposes, ia vicious, and is a breapli of faith with the public; (8) That it. is opposed to the principles of economic government, which the Ministry are pledged to maintain, and thtt if the purposes for which the proposed taxis destined oannot bo otherwise served, the expenditure should be done without." All the speakers disclaimed any political move, most of theiu stating that they were supporters of the present Government.
