[From Our Own Correspondent] A public meeting \m held in the schoolroom on July 3rd to discuss the advisability of forming a fire brigade, but was as usual very poorly attended, Several gentlemen present sunko very strongly on tho nonattendance of tho large property owners. Mr T. Buyliss explained tho object of the m'eeting, and Mi' Bennett moved that a fire brigade be formed, Mr Murdock seconded the motion,which waa carried Discussiou then ensued as to the different methods adopted by fire brigades. 'Mr Toohill moved, that considering (lie small attendance « meeting be called for a future date, Mr Bennett movp.d as an amendment that a brigade be formed - at once, Tne amendment wits carried. Mr Hodges expalineJ to the meeting bis experiences of tho numerous brigades that he had been connected with, and that in his opinion, taking into consideration the size oE tho town and the fund that would- be . available, a hook and ladder company would bo the most efMnt, In answer to the chair Mr Hodges explained to the meeting lull particulars as to the articles required, the cost of same, and the method of training the men. Mr Bennett proposed that a salvage corps lie formed, to act in conjunction with the nroposed brigade, : This was opposed by several gentlemen on the ground tljat the two bodies would clash, -Tho motion nfMr Hodges that a hook and ladder company be formed was seconded by Mr Aulin and carried uuaniinonly, Mr Hodges proposed that Mr. Wallace be elected captain, with Mr Brenmuhl foreman, and Mr Bennett secretary, . Carried. ' Mr Toohill moved tlutt the officers elected take all necessary steps to' form the Brigade, and report at a meeting to be held duriug the month. Carried. A vote of thanks to the chair closed (he meeting.
Dr h»B, I understand, decided to remain in.Ekotaliuna, The new additions to tho school will bo proceeded with at pnee by the contractor, and completed in time for the opening after the winter holidays.
,Mr T. Parsopa'intends calling for tenders for the ereotion of the Eketahuna lyitfl. immediately on completion of plans by % architect, Mr King.
