(BeforeMesarsFaivbrotlierandßayliss ■ J.Pb) Charles Dougherty, a stranger in Carterton, waa charged with tho larceny of rugs, wearing apparel, tobacco, &c, the property of Alex. Hughes, a bush-clearing contractor on the Ahikouka estate near Greytown, Tho accused waa convicted and sentenced to two months' imprisonment in Wellington gaol with hard labour, Mr Acheson, who appeared for the accused, pleaded that the case should be considered as one to which »h»» Mbbation statute might apply, The application was refused. Constable Darby prosecuted on behalf of the police.
