A Prospector Drowned.
Jmwmu, Friday.
A cutter arrived at Stewart Island from the goldfiold at Preservation Inlet, reports that a watchmaker named Clark, from Dunedin,. was drowned while attempting to land at Goal Island. The boat capsized, but four other qooupants were rescued. There are 70 men on the field, but the weather ia very bad, interfering with prospecting on the mainland,

' At a meeting of tho Canterbury Trotting Association, it was resolved that the Metropolitan Clubs affiliated to the New Zealand Trotting Association be not required; to submit their programmes, and that they be empowered to pass all programmes containing trotting events within their provincial. districts, provided the necessary fees are paid, and the Association is in accordance!with'the rules. Opinions were strongly expressed adverse to the present mode of granting totalisator permits, and a sub-committee was appointed, consisting of all. the delegates present, to go thoroughly into the present system of granting totalisator licenses.
