By the "Scotsman" of the 22nd March, which has just-reached us, we notice that Mr Carr Smith, the eldest son of Dr Smith, of Greytown, is achieving distinct success in his medical studios in Edinburgh. In the prize list for the winter session of tho School of Medicine be figures remarkably well. In practical materia medica and pharmacy, Mr Smith heads the list, and has boon awarded a silver medal for his proficienoy. Ho was also high up in the senior practical anatomy class, being third with a percentage of 85, He was thus next to the two gold medallists in this section. In materia medica and therapeutics, Mr Smith acquired a first-class certificate with 70 per cent, Tho session has been remarkable for the large number of models takon by colonial students, and we are pleased to bo able to congratulate Dr Smith on the distinguished position his son occupies, in having personally contributed to bo gratifying a result. Ono of the cases at preieut in tho Grey town Hospital—that of a young fellow-is of rather a painful nature. He was thrown from his horse at Pahau and had his head injured. At first he seemed to be getting well, but a change for tho worse set in, and now ho is at the Hospital suffering apparently from paralysis of the brain.

Advices received from Yokohama" dated 30th January, contain details of a foarful cycloho which swept along the Japanese coast from 24th January to 2(ith January, cau»ing the loss of 900 fishing vessels and tlie drowning of upwards of 2000 fishermen. The oyclone first burst upon a part of the coast where mora than 1000 fishing boats wero engaged In fishing, CJoae upon COOfoimdored, «ndl8,000! of the fishermen aboard them were drowned, Most of the bodies drifted up on the boach and were taken care of by relatives, The scenes -were heartrending. Thesamoday eleven boats wero wrecked in tho sea off Tobishuna during a etorm, and 50 fishormen were drowned, On 25th January 23 fisher men were drowned on the coast off Maschawo. News has also been.received of the disastrous storm which swept ovor the coast of Tourkommaohosie Kadsusam during the night of 26th January. Over 800 fishing boats that wero out never returned. Tho funeral ceremonies for about 600 fishormen supposed to have been drowned were observed. _ "Whole villages were in mourning/and tho Government authorities gave holp in burying the dead.
