On the attainment of his 78th birthday yesterday, Sir F. Whitaker, who is in very good health, received numerous congratulations. A meeting of shipowners and shipbuilders of this port was held to-day, when a resolution vms passed protesting against certain rules of tho newly formed Auckland Shipwrights' Protection Society as arbitrary and unworkable. Tho rules objected to are numbers 4, 6, G, and 12, and deal with wages paid to apprentices on completing a period of five years' service and other matters,' A committee was appointed to confer with a committee of the Society, Mr Charles Rhodes, formerly of the Bank of New Zealand at Paeroa, has beenappointedassayer and.chemist to tho Broken Hill Junction Silver Mining Company. It is stated that some of the members of the Bakers' Union, as well as some of the master bakers, are not conforming to tho rules ol.the union, and the committee are ■ investigating tho matter.
CmiisTonuncn, April 24. The body of the lad Alexander, drowned in th'o Wairoakariri, on Saturday, was recovered this afternoon. A conference of the City Council and the suburban local bodies was held to-day to consider the amalgamation of the city and suburbs. A motion in favor of this was proposed by the representatives of the City Council, but consideration thereof was postponed for a fortnight.
Conference ot Local BodiesCiiKtsicnuaon, April 24, A conference was held to day of representatives from the Canterbury Councils, Hospital and Charitable Aid _ Boards, Committees were appointed to report on the best mothod of managing tho water races and dealing with the obstructions in rivers. The conference also resolved 11 that clause 248 of the Counties Act be altered so as to take the power from the Governor to force any council to repair any road, bridge, or ferry, and iu lieu thereof to allow the County Councils to say whether these roads, eto, be maintained or not, their decision to be final," "That further addition be made to section 248, to class all bridges into first and second class, all first class to be maintained by the Councils, all others to be kept up or not as tho Councils may decide." •' That roads running along tho boundaries between two counties, although each road is in the one county, bo declared county roads within the meaning of the Act." A resolution was also passed condemning tho proposed Hospital and Charitable Aid Bill, and expressing an opinion that the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards should be eleoted by the contributing local bodies.
