Correspondence.

Unchecked Larrikinism.

(To the Editor.) Sin.—l did not get your Monday's issuo till yesterday afternoon,Bo bad no chance to anawer the question asked , by" Play Fair." I assure that indii£ vidual that I am very much surpriai/dlT'■" to bear that the tinkettlero (boys, several of whom ire in the third standard) commit the offences I mentioned. If "Play Fair" was not bo positive on the subject, I could hardly believe that children go dock and pigeon shooting out of season, steal apples by the sack, steal vegetables and give the owner a thrashing when ho catches them. Rather old fashioned boys that do these tricks. If "Play Fair" and the Police know tho perpetrators, why on earth do they not catch them breaking into (Jk an empty house and stealing its lents, or in some orchard with a sack - of apples on their back. The police would then have a cubo worth taking up the time of tho R,M, and one for which ho would feel justified in treating soveiely. Let " Play Fair" ask any orcharilistlfho thinks arresting tinkettlers will have any effect on the orchard robbing that has been going on wholesale all tho season, and let him ask any real sportsman if ha thinks it will have any effect on tho ducks that havo been killed all through the breeding season. For my part I do not believe in larrikinism or tinkettlins;, but I believe an old established custom if not carried too should bo left alone until some of - more important offences are chocked, The police may have taken a Btep in the right direction but,l contend they have begun at the wrong end. I will not call "Play Fair's" an ill-considered letter, but allow the public to judgo which would be tho fairest and most reasonable course to pursue. : f
