THE HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

I'm; Autumn Show, under the auspices of. the Masterton Horticultural ami Industrial Society, was held in tbo Volunteer Drill Hall to-day, the circumstances in every respect being favorable. The weather is beautifully fine, and this, together with the fact that the fortnightly stock sale' of Messrs Lowes and Jorns is being held this afternoon, will doubtless ensure the attendance being as largo, if not larger, than is usual ou suoli occasions. The Committee, together with the Secretary, liavebeen assiduously engaged staging the various exhibits, and tbe whole arrangements have been carried out satisfactorily. Tho exhibits in fruit by far surpass anything that lias yet been seen in tho district, and tho awarding of prizes will, as a result, be anything but an easy task In vegetables, the exhibition is creditable indeed, although numerically they do »oi oomo' up to the mark. Several entries lave been received from Parltville, which will attract tbe attention of tbe public, amongst tbe flumberbeing a giaut cabbage, 4ft in circumference, and weighing nearly SOlbs. Tho show of pot plants is exceedingly good, and there ia considerable competition, but in cut flowers there is a decided falling off. This can only be accounted for by the dry season j Mr Robert Donald, of the Taueri),- oiie of the principal exhibitors of last year, is unable ; to compete on this occasion iu the vegetable class, owing to tlio cold nights wliiclilms of lata prevailed

Tbo industrial exhibits are numerous ■ and good, and are quite up to the ; usual standard, whilst in produce ; there is a fair display. Very few i ; works of art are, we regret to say,, ■: to-be seen on the walls. Taken as a whole, howover, the exhibition is' creditable to the distriot, and shows ;; clearly that our soil ts adapted to the ;; cultivation of fruits and vegetables of- •; every description,. The hall , will be 1 open to the public between tlic hours ; of 2 p.m. and 10 p.m, and. in the-. evening Pearson's brass band will be in attendance.' A. detailed report of ; the show, iu which will" appear -a brief reference to flie various oxhihits, togethorwith a list of prize-takers, ;; will bo published in to-morrow's ■; ssue.
