Wellington, February 8. The superintendent of the Cable Company has advised tho Press Association that the s,s. Scotia, 4667 tons, 550 h.p., owned by tho Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company, will leave London for New Zealand on the 20th inst, with a Now Zealand duplicate cable on board. The Sculling Match. Wellington, Tuosday. The southerly wind continues, preventing the soulling match coming off this morning, DROWNED. Hokitika, February 3. A boy about 12 years of age, son of Robert Park and nephew of the wellknown canoeist, was drowned tonight, He was in a boat with his fathor and another "man, when the current carried the boat over the bar. Tho deceased was drowned in the surf. The two men wore rescued, The body has not yet been found, Cheap Gas. Auckland, February 8. The Directors of the Auckland Gas Company announced at the annual meeting of that body, that the prospects of the Company were so good that they intended to reduce the price ofgas from 7s 6d to 6s Bd, or a reduction of lOd per 1000 feet. The accounts showed a net profit of £22,986, and there was a balanco from last year of £13,269. Dividends were declared as follows:—8s Gd per share ou fully paid up shares, and 4s 3d ou half-paid up shares, leaving £8931 to be added to tho reserve fund, and £3310 to be carried forward. Beefton, February B.' On reaching Breen's Hotel this afternoon, Mr McWilhams, driver of the coach, got off tbo box to receive tho luggage for a passongcr, and while so engaged the horses started. Mc Williams ran and got tho reins, but the horses could not be pulled up, and as be ran the forewbeel passed over his heel and bo fell into tho ditch, but was not much hurt beyond a sprained ankle, On rounding tho embankment approaching the Inaugahua bridge the coach went over the embankment with one lady passenger and a Chinaman. The coach turned completely over, The Chinaman scrambled out laughing and unhurt. The woman struggled out, and found her collar bone broken and hor face soratohed, but no serious injury. Her name is Mrs Mahoney, from Totara. Fiat. The horses continued their career to the bridge, and the way being barred by a seven horse waggon, drivon by J. Pike, tbo runaways dashed into them and becamo locked. Assistance then came. Tho horses were rather bady injured. Piko's team escaped injury, The coaoli is not materially damaged.
Gold Mining. Hokitika, February 3, There is au increasing good gold yield from the baok creok, and the population is setting in there to a considerable extent. Tho auriforous country, the minors assert, would equal Kumara if a largo water supply was procurable.
