The Wairarapa Daily MONDAY. FEBRUARY 8, 1890. Volunteering in Masterton.
Ov late years volunteering in Mastorton retrograded till at one timo tbe local corps seemed to have degenerated into a mere rifle club. Inspections were such hollow shams, and church parades such dismal failures, that one wondered how the company hung together and complied with the regulations essential to capitation and official existence. The reasons whioh led to this forlorn condition of our no doubt bravo defenders were tolerably evident, The drill instructor, who formorly resided in Masterton and was wanted here, was moved to I'eathernton, where his services were less needed; and the commanding officer of the corps was compelled by private engagements to be frequently absent from Masterton for considerable periods, and could not givo that attention to the men which was absolutely necessary at a time when the volunteer spirit was extremely passive in this neighborhood, Now we are happy to notice that a revival bas set in and the local co<p is once more coming to the front as a body of well equipped and well drilled men, which is a credit to Masterton, This change is mainly due to the fact that the services of a new commanding officer have been secured, who is ablo to devote time to the improvement of the corps and take a thoroueh interest in working it up, Captain Pownall, during the few months since he joined the corps, has infused into it new life and vigor, and a body of rnou who but a short time ago wore regarded as an awkward and ill-dressed squad are now assuming a smart soldierly appearance. We welcome the revival because though the Maßterton corps has always retained an excellent reputation for skill with the rifle, we scarcely regard good shooting as a first dmderatim in such a body of men, Of course if it ever came to bo the duty of our local corpt to repel the attack of an invading force, a practical knowledge of bow to handlo a rifle would bo of great importance, but we do not anticipate that any such call will ever be made upon them, What we like in volunteering, whou it is conducted as Captain Pownall is endeavoring to conduct it, is to soe men learn to obey promptly the word of command, bold their beads up, march instead of sloupji, and become good comrades. A, descipline of this character is a distinct gain to any man, and to a young man it is infinitely better than tbe frivolous amusements in which time is occasionally frittered away, We venture to hope, too, that the - present revival in volunteering in this neighborhood will extend to tho School Cadet com. Latterly' ibis bpdy lias been loss in pvidenco than it formerly used to be, and has consequently been less thought of, It is said that tbe cadets are without uniform, and if this be the case it accounts for their non-appearance before the public. We were, however, under the impression that tbe corps has had for some time a substantial credit balance, and if this be so the want of a suitable uniform is inexcusable, - We are glad to hear that tbe Upper Plain cadet corqs, under tbe able instraotibn of Mr J. Williams, is, making headway, and.we trust soon to see Masterton turn out on a parade ground a body of Volunteers and cadets that will be a preditto the district........
